The Five Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts

By: Gary Chapman

This is probably one of the most well-known and most often read books on couple communication out there. In this book the author details five key love languages that individuals use to communicate and receive affection in relationships. These love languages are used not only in our romantic relationships, but can also be used with our friends and family to convey our care or appreciation.

All too often couples miscommunicate when it comes to showing their love and affection for their partners. Spouses often get stuck in a pattern of feeling unappreciated and unnoticed in their relationships when really, they are just speaking different love languages than their husband or wife. Understanding the five love languages, and which language you and your partner speak most often will help you to get unstuck in your relationship today. It is a must read for couples wanting to improve their intimacy and communication, and there is even an app where you can take a free love language quiz. See the resource portion of this post for links to the book on Amazon and the apps on the app store.

Picking the right guy may have been easy. However, you don’t get to pick his family. This book is written for a Christian audience, but has some absolutely great tips for women who are struggling with their in-law relationship. It is a must read for all; even if you don’t identify as a Christian or religious.

Often it is at the time of the wedding planning that difficulties may become apparent about in-law relations, but they can pop-up at any point in time in your marriage. This book gets down to the nitty-gritty details of both positions in a mother-in-law or daughter-in-law relationship, and provides helpful insights and encouragement to both parties. Becoming best friends with your MIL or DIL does not have to be a goal or desire in order to read this book, but it will help both of you to come to a better understanding about how you can begin to work in tandem rather than against one another.
